Well, hello there and thanks for surfing my wave!
Ingrid Bergman has been quoted as saying that old age is like climbing a mountain. You climb from ledge to ledge. The higher you get the more tired and breathless you become, but your views become more extensive. This is so true; I became even more aware of this as my family hiked the Sierra Nevada’s. In fact, my 11-year-old daughter went ahead of me on one trail as I needed to stop due to height exposure. Good for her as she got to that peak, I did not. She will remember that moment, as will I for her. May that decision take her to places of equal or greater heights.
For the employment challenged, these also becomes quintessential statements as we, seemingly eternally, look and modify our search for employment, going from ledge to ledge as well making sure we hold steady and don’t fall off this delicate precipice. This trip is way beyond tiring and can suck every ounce of breath from your soul - if you let it. We are most definitely on a treacherous mountain trying to navigate as best we can our exploration for new frontiers; a job. And of course, as Ms. Bergman indicated, we’re not getting any younger so this hunt isn’t getting any easier. Our economy has unfortunately dictated that the younger, more agile college graduates are having an unusual time as well charting this course and keeping up especially in the State of California where the unemployment rate is approaching an unprecedented apex of twelve percent – vistas never seen before, vistas this time that are not pretty at all. Bad memories just as vivid, forcing people down a slope that could have been much more scenic at a velocity that has lethal potential.
So how do we get our groove back? How can we get back in our saddles yet again and venture out to more stable and beautiful views?
Find a different mountain to climb.
That’s right – nobody said it absolutely must be this mountain; what about the one across the canyon? Let’s try that one! From my angle, it doesn’t appear that many folks are on it. Maybe we can make a mad dash over to it by nightfall and hit the trailhead by dawn. Teach yourself something new – try to look at things in ways that others haven’t seen before by being creative. Create and build incredible corridors for you to travel up and on to. So many people are seeking work by doing the same things over and over and over; it’s just insane. You be the innovative one and show them how it’s done. If it weren’t for the brave and adventurous pioneers, we wouldn’t be where we are today – please think in positive terms as hard as that my sound and seem. Yes, it’s only a few that take advantage of and abuse what great things this life has to offer to dry up our rivers and streams, but let’s not fall into that trap and be one of them that have made headlines so often recently. All things being equal, the world is good and we have these people to thank. Let’s continue with that constructive thought and be the ones for our children’s children, our future, to make a difference and move our world forward, together.
“The excitement of learning separates youth from old age. As long as you are learning, you’re not old.”
~ Rosalyn Sussman Yalow, U.S. Medical Physicist
