Well, hello there and thanks for surfing my wave!
Yes, I’m back in the saddle and ready to confront whatever the horses’ mouth has to offer. While in the mountains, I can’t say I saw any horses that offered me any jobs. Actually, I didn’t see any horses; several animal varieties I haven’t seen in quite awhile, but no horses. I see horses a lot in my daily travels, so I’m fortunate I was able to see fresh vistas on this trip, which adds to my point – innovative ways to do the same thing whether it be travelling or looking for a job.
Nobody was hiring, not that I was looking, but you know the adage, “When you least expect it…” Most of the population there works for the US Depts. of Agriculture, Forestry or some entity associated with those Agencies. I never envisioned myself as a fruit and vegetable picker or a Park Ranger anyways…
Do you like to vacation? Do you go to the same places each and every year? Do you job hunt the same way you travel; constantly staying at the same places at your final destination and all stops in between? Always finding yourself looking for work in all the wrong places and wondering why your lodging, once spectacular, after awhile gets old and stale? It’s time to shuffle the deck.
Like searching for employment, we must venture out to different locales rummaging around for what’s new to explore; uncover something that you haven’t seen or done for the umpteenth time. The world is a vast and wondrous planet – see what it has to harvest other than the vines you’ve picked through. Chances are, they’ve been picked clean and left barren. It’s time to move on to greener and more prosperous pastures. California is an enormous State with even larger strife and debt; at least where you live, if not in my neck of the woods, go out, investigate and cultivate fresh fertile soil. Yes, we’re broke and unemployed, but still what little we have saved (and we all should have some of that) at least don’t squander it at the same places every year. Take the money and yourself and invest in an original plan.
As we drive from place to place, we see the same beggars at the same freeway exits and intersections, right? We’ve seen each other before; are you going to have a change of heart this time if you didn’t give them a handout the first time? Probably not. Try a different approach and drive a different route to get there.
As we refocus our attention to the job hunt, let’s reminisce a moment on the exciting and diverse things we did on vacation and duplicate those efforts here so that, in the end, we know we’ve tried our best to create something that hasn’t been done before. We’re painfully aware of what we tell ourselves; what we can and can’t do. The goal here is to apply those self-regulated principles to employment, and possibly stretch a little bit more so we can go farther in our search like the massive rock I traversed this week. Having seen the path to the top from the ground on which I stood, many years ago I would have declined the incline, but this time I stood at the bottom and said to myself I already know what the view is from here. I don’t know what’s at the top, but I can see it clearly from my camera’s eye. Wouldn’t it be fabulous if I could see the sights from up top first hand? So I went to the top, and I encourage all of you to do the same. See what hurdles you can climb over or around to get the best live picture of your life – get your own perspective of life and then take the picture. The memories will be much richer knowing that in yesteryear, you would have never entertained the thought.
Now picture that experience getting to the top!
