“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~Mark Twain
WOW! What an exceptional quote; and I discovered this gem posted by a friend while scanning my Facebook page. See how creative the world can be these days? All the information needed, and then some exists today – literally – at our finger tips; all we need to do is let our fingers do the walking and find it!
It’s Not the Yellow Pages Anymore: Don’t Lead a Life of Unemployed Tunnel Vision.
Referencing the quote, take a look at what we didn’t know 20 years ago and what our lives would be like if we did. Awesome and scary at the same time. Disease research and advances in molecular nuclear technologies and other medical platforms geared toward curing. People died then from things that would be human error or indicators overlooked or not fully investigated today.
If those geniuses that created and laid ground twenty years ago didn’t act on their impulses and thoughts, we’d be even worse off now. These innovators had time and the wherewithal to allow their visions to come to the forefront and truly sail away. In our job-search if we are forever moored to our old ways and behaviors, we won’t stand a chance of getting noticed. No single element will be responsible for offering us a job; infinite combinations of mixtures that we continue to develop, enhance and maintain that will carry us into our destined port of call will remedy our signals of distress. Please remember that it is people that hire us, not the computers that we so dominantly occupy. The technology is greatly needed (hence the quote) and, if properly applied, can provide you great strides in anchoring your next position. It is the reaching out to others that will increase our chances of employment.
Twenty years ago, our lists and opportunities to the future were vastly limited. As Mr. Twain so eloquently affirmed, leave your comfort zone, that safe harbor and embark on a personal journey that could very well lead you on a course to riches. Those winds are faster and more furious than ever now, and if you catch the jet stream just right, that current will be your savior just like those that came before.
So I leave you today as I started; scanning the endless pages of our lives where you can meet and reacquaint yourself with more friends than strangers. Social Networking Media and its legacy; I am on LinkedIn, Facebook (where I found the quote that sparked this post), Twitter, YouTube, Meetup, PinkSlipMixers and many others. I go to masses of “in your face” meetings every month – ‘cause people hire…and to make this article come full-circle, when I search for people I come in contact with on some of these sites, I find that in my LinkedIn account I’m already connected with them through my list of contacts and I didn’t even know…until I looked and researched as we should be doing with our targeted companies to see if we know anyone or know of friends that do. There are two classmates with whom I’ve reestablished contact and they have helped me along this jobless journey. I’m doing it, and so should you.
You know, the pages that were called Yellow decades ago might have been a sign of the future; the color yellow connotes aging, fading or poorly maintained. Today’s’ eco-friendly color is Green – which means go and…what’s the Color of Money?
My advice? Don’t be the buoy left bobbing in the sea.
Again, thanks for surfing my wave!
