Kiss this year goodbye and point me toward tomorrow. I can honestly say there is no part of 2009 I want to remember…sayonara!
Having said that, I am convinced this time I will come out a better and brighter human being having gone through what was the worst year of my life. I guess you can call the end result (eventually finding a job) the silver lining, but I’m still waiting. January 15th will be one year of unemployment and this week will be the first time I meet with an individual face-to-face for a possible opportunity; it could be huge…there is much hope. Hope is all we have; as long as you accomplish something in your job-search each day, there is always hope. All the rest is just a story that, in a few years, will make us all laugh…hopefully.
So what can we take away from this horrific year that is motivational and positive? If we’ve done it right, we should know ourselves better and come out of this stronger and smarter. With all the knowledge we have absorbed and digested and the insight we have developed, we most certainly are better employees and any corporation should be grateful to have us on board; we are more creative and harder-working individuals with a drive to perform and succeed greater than ever before.
It has been agreed upon that, for the most part, the worst is over but the aftermath and rebuilding will take a couple of years to stabilize and regain momentum. We must put ourselves on a fast-track to include us in that equation of hiring upswings. One would think since we’ve been at this so long, any opening out there should fall squarely in out laps – complacency has no place at the table…blink once and you lose. It is crucial that we keep at it and stay connected…never ever give up, especially during the holiday season; I’ve actually had many leads come my way this month and I am making every effort to follow-up on all of them in the next two weeks.
So here’s a toast to an end-of-the-year push for success and prosperity for one and all! As my friend and mentor Deborah Gallant so succinctly inspires: Accept the fact that we’re not in a great place, but realize it’s only temporary; network at every party and home you visit and bring plenty of business cards; do some forward planning for the New Year and take stock in what you’ve accomplished thus far in your job-search; be thankful for what you do have and, most importantly…have a little fun – we all deserve and desperately need some right about now!
We are not alone in this…yeah, we keep hearing this but it’s true. Honestly, for every horror story I tell, there’s always another in the crowd that equals or surpasses mine so here’s my New Years’ Resolution…
Let’s start looking for the inspiring, positive and healthy stories in the coming year and stay away from the negative. Good is happening; let’s look for that and try to be an integral part of it.
Warmest Wishes to You and Yours…Happy New Year emphasizing the Happy and New part!
