Responding to Unemployment Outcomes

by TUM on July 13, 2009

Well, hello there and thanks for surfing my wave!

As the heat of the Summer drudges on and the results of our fiery job-search cools to an all-time low, we sit aimlessly in front of our overheating computers, having worked overtime with no break in sight, we ask ourselves this burning question:

What will be the outcome of this and when?

Good question…Well, the fact of the matter is we’re all in the same boat – we’re unemployed, which is sounding more and more like a vocation than part-time frenzy.  How do we prevent our ship from sinking?  The overall situation, having been placed in it, is beyond our control.  We cannot wish or should of this or that – there’s no going backwards.  So we query our internal databases and search to find its true meaning; how do we respond to such an overwhelming blow to our lives?  Here in lies our true test.

We are excruciatingly aware of what it is we cannot control.  The problem and task we bitterly encounter is what to do about it; the response.  The outcome of anything in life is directly correlated to how we react, or respond, to the stimulus that’s been placed before us, or the event.

Events, or what’s out of our hands, plus our reaction to it, which is completely within our power to address, will give us our outcome.  So it seems fair here to say that it’s up to us to make positive and beneficial changes in our lives to turn around this disease that’s afflicted us. We cannot change what we cannot control (layoff), but we can be in command of and dictate how we leverage its outcome (finding work) by making constructive moves toward that end.  It’s all about aptitude and attitude.  If all we do is look down and beat down on ourselves, all we will see is the ground; that’s clearly not where it’s at.  We must cancel out those feelings and reactions to things that bother us.  They say you can’t change people.  Absolutely correct!  The good thing about us humans is we come with no assembly required.  We can fix what’s broken, but short of a Dr. Phil marathon, we cannot be reassembled.  BUT…if we look closely at how we grasp at what we can manage, we can be better as individuals requiring less fixing.  We can direct what we do as a result of what we’re unable to modify.  It’s been said, if life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

So if you’re thirsty for a mental transformation, we cannot change what we see, but we can revolutionize how we experience and respond to what we see to make us distinguishable from the others.  We can make a difference, however we must go about it differently to affect that.  If we act and react to every event we can’t change as we have in the past, we will be the same individuals living in that past.  If we become forward thinkers taking command of how we take action to the dog-eared and tattered cards we are dealt, we will be ahead of our opposition and will be much better equipped to divide and conquer.

Let us put some wind back into our sails and venture toward calmer waters by first not panicking by the storm, but by working to move away from it by having sharper vision to chart that course, clearer focus to maintain that healthier course and inspiration to know and appreciate that the new course you’re on will lead to triumph.

I’ll take that lemonade blended…with a splash of whatever the ship has on discount.  Cheers!
