Yesterday I attended a fabulous all-day workshop devoted to giving unemployed people key tools to improving their job search.
How many emails have we received to fine-tune, re-tool and ramp-up our resume? Over 100 probably. It’s our best marketing and sales tool, right? A solid resume will rocket us to the top of the “A” pile!
Well, if it’s a rocket booster we need to get us an interview, perhaps we’re just shooting for the stars without thinking properly about time and space.
Maybe it’s time to take TheHireRoad and go beyond your resume.
My website is devoted to creating ways to become more innovative, effective and forward-thinking in our job search; TheHireRoad hits the nail on the head with a resounding bull’s-eye. Gregory Wood, President & CEO of the company, accomplishes this with a variety of tools…at this seminar, he highlighted The Biography. It resembles a carefully crafted and targeted extension and combination of your elevator pitch and cover letter without giving away your age, education, job history or anything that might eliminate you from contention as resumes consistently do. It needs to be very well written and planned; the website gives you all the details. I actually won a copy of the complete program and encourage all of you to consider it. I haven’t gone through all the CD’s and manuals yet, but the 60-minute presentation I saw was remarkable – just what everyone needs to rethink what we’re doing and how we are looking for a job.
The biography doesn’t replace the resume as at some point you will need a good one to follow-up the bio. Here how it works…resumes indicate a job seeker and are quite limited in their scope and value. What you need to do is target your perspective companies and hiring managers (your perspective boss) and send them (via express mail to create some urgency) your biography which will introduce you to them in a very non-invasive, non-committal fashion. You simply state (among other things) you like the company and want the opportunity to open up the lines of communication; you are not looking for a job (who cares that you are, just be non-chalant here). The goal here is to open a door without doing what everyone else in the unemployed world is doing…sending resumes ad nauseum. We need to be increasingly different and radical with our approach to seeking employment; this will clearly set you apart from the others.
If you really aren’t interested in creating a job as my motto states, at least meet yourself half-way and be creative with the skills you have; show them off in ways that few have attempted. Get out of your house and meet people who are doing and trying new approaches.
We have many roads from which to choose and travel on our path to employment; most of the roads are gridlocked and virtually impassable with people using old and ineffective models. These streets are cracking and buckling with age and overuse…
…This is why I’ve decided to give TheHireRoad a test-drive – how about you? It could be the direction you’re looking for; if you’ve been lost for awhile, why not?
As Always, Thanks For Surfing My Wave!
