Bowling For Unemployment Dollars

by TUM on April 29, 2009

Well, hello there and thanks for surfing my wave!

A week or so ago I took my 5-year-old son bowling; something I recommend all of you to do with your children; and now is a great time to go!  We had a blast – and it was completely free!

Ever think you’re below a hand-out?  Don’t want to be known as a beggar or cheat?  Me looking for coupons?  My ego is way above that!

Let’s start thinking about your wallet and not so much that chip on your shoulder.  You’re not alone; most people don’t.  My advice is to start if you haven’t already.  It’s fun and challenging to see if you can find the right ones you’ll actually use and to see if you can outdo yourself each week.  Most online retailers prompt you for a coupon code at checkout so it’s not like they don’t know its coming.  Take every advantage of it.

There are many things we can’t do in the short-term, but we can maximize our chances to do other things and make it more affordable by spending time everyday looking at printed and virtual coupon sources.  Remember those annoying throw away mailers you’d get every week?  They could be your ace in the hole right about now.  Let’s call them hidden treasures.  Have the kids help you out; reward them with whatever it is they find that’s within your budget and, of course, something you would do or purchase anyway.

Now I don’t advise or suggest you go below your means because I don’t.  Just look for things in your regular path of travel, or maybe something new that looks tempting, and look for savings there.  And don’t be afraid of taking a little more if the merchant gives back the coupons for you to use again providing it’s within its expiration.  Value added!  Just remember if you enjoyed your stay there, go back on your dollar when you can.

As stark and in-your-face as unemployment is, we must make the time as creative and practical as possible.  And toss in a little fun while you’re at it!

What are you doing to save a little?  Please comment!  Click above link – if it says “No Comment”, be the first!  Thanks!

Don’t let the coupon thing get you down! Sure, you can tell yourself that you didn’t need to clip coupons when you could afford to shop at Whole Foods or Gelson’s. You could say to yourself that saving a dollar won’t pay the mortgage. What you really need is a paradigm shift regarding “couponing”. Think of it as a challenge employing strategic planning and short-term goal setting. Do it right and the experience might awaken some ancient hunter/gatherer DNA. The challenge is to leave the market with the most stuff, with the lowest possible bill. The long-term goal is to keep your checking account balance as high as possible for as long as possible. If you really want to reach for the stars, plan your shopping trip so that at checkout time, the store owes you money for what you’ve purchased.
