Exasperating Expectations of Unemployed America

by TUM on November 13, 2009

Much to the chagrin of Mouseketeers, Denmark is the Happiest Place On Earth.

Why?

Danes have record-low expectations of themselves and their Country.  They take everything as it comes and completely at face value.  Danes don’t count on anything to enhance their livelihood; whatever comes their way they amply appreciate and embrace with open arms.  Danish people by nature don’t have heady thoughts, wants or inspirations – they simply exist.  This is their culture.

This premise begs us jobless Americans in search of the American Dream to ask this one fleeting question, “Why the hell are we in this mess?”  Good question; glad I asked!

Do you hear of any analysts, economic interpreters, or government gurus condensing 2000 pages of hogwash into slanted, bias and self-absorbing sound bites coming out of Denmark?  I think not.  Do you hear ridiculous and flaunting forecasts, numeric numbness and erroneous earnings reports translating into what America coins “higher or lower than expected” whatever inflicting unnecessary havoc on every global economic barometer and index emanating from Denmark?  Uh, no.

If Denmark’s’ business model includes no expectations of any kind, and all reports indicate they live quite prosperously, then why don’t we adopt such a practice?  Americans thrive with baited breath waiting for the latest and greatest idiots to forecast and spin what little we have to invest and hope for into oblivion.  When was the last time any of them were dead-on accurate?

This, in my small opinion, is our crisis: We put ourselves in crisis mode by trusting those that are paid to sway opinion by lobbyists and corporate, white-collar criminals who have only their interests in mind.  Some news media outlets get edicts from bosses who are pushing their own philosophies and cultural biases.  Is this any way to live?

If the world had no expectations and just did the best they possibly could for themselves and the company that pays them with no executive torment, greed or postulation, we’d all be working today – and a happier people to boot.  Don’t expect, just do.  Don’t think about the what-ifs, the shoulda, coulda, wouldas.

If we think about the work at hand and not its reward, then when we do receive remuneration, it will be all that more meaningful.  You see, it’s the reward that makes us corrupt; enjoy the work and work hard and steady and if it’s honest work you will reap its benefits, handily.

As we, the unemployed, are admonished about daily…never ask about salary in the interview; it’s about the work and what you can accomplish for the company not what you’re going to get out of it.  Let the offer guide the compensation.  Corporate America is gleaning bad press today because of so few crooked individuals looking at the money and not the work – they got carried away and our dreams when down with them.

We, as a people and a Nation, need to think more like the Danes.  If we runaway with what we expect, we will lose sight of the venture, the goal…and the task at hand…finding a job.  This is not meant to be easy, but if we change our methods we might be able to convince others of it as well.

“Every great and deep difficulty bears in itself its own solution. It forces us to change our thinking in order to find it.”

Hey – nice blog, just looking around some blogs, seems a pretty nice platform you are using. I’m currently using Wordpress for a few of my sites but looking to change one of them over to a platform similar to yours as a trial run. Anything in particular you would recommend about it?
