Giving Attitude Adjustment Advice to the Unemployed

by TUM on November 9, 2009

I just completed a week-long training workshop designed to teach strategies for a successful job search.  Funny enough this is all made possible at no cost to the attendees through the EDD.  You can find your nearest Chapter by visiting this website and learn more about the program.  I encourage all of you in California to register and for others out of state to research what your EDD has to offer in the way of teaching tools for your job search.

All the materials, speakers and panelists were incredibly complete and current; the moderators were highly knowledgeable on today’s trends and issues.  All topics covered were pertinent, resourceful and helped everyone regardless of what stage we were in with unemployment.

What I found the most rewarding was the content behind the tools.  Many people can tell you how to dress, draft cover letters and resumes, interview and network, but only you can change your attitude.  You might be the best salesperson with the most powerful tools in the world, but if you don’t believe in the product you’re selling (YOU), then you’re a lost cause.

Always believe in yourself
Think positively in any situation
Try again if things go wrong
Initiate a positive self-image
Trust others and be trustworthy
Understand that people make mistakes
Decide you can do anything
Enjoy life like a winner

The Unemployed need to work harder than any other group of people to get ourselves to a point where we care and matter to others.  Employment has this crazy hold on us making us feel complete; without work, we are lost in a daze of the unknown with no place to be and no place to go.  Misplaced misfits with no purpose in life.

Working to develop and improve our Attitude will get us beyond that and make us more productive in our job-search and give it, and ourselves, more meaning.  If you look at the way a house is framed, you can determine if it’s fit to support its inhabitants.  The same holds true for people who dwell in those houses; if our mind is framed properly, we can formulate and support positive thoughts that will exude effective behavior, demonstrate self-confidence and display strength in our ability to generate impressive first-impressions when meeting people.  Now is the time to focus on our determination to succeed in finding a job.  Attitude equals altitude, so make sure to keep yours elevated so as not to fall into a deep descent.

Much was covered over the five days, but if you look upon it negatively thinking this will never work for you – it surely won’t because you won’t let it.  Education has a lot to do with being open-minded and able to think differently.  Unfortunately, the older we get, the more this applies.  After all, we’ve been doing things certain ways for so long and things appear to be running smoothly, why now are we finding out that it’s changed?  Well, with technology leading the pack of change and the economy the worst in our history, if we are unable to use the newest models to our advantage and be adaptable to change, we’re all in trouble.  Looking for a job is no longer old-school, it’s new-school and the schoolhouse is still under construction.  Being unemployed, we need to be at the very top of our game knowing the latest and greatest of what’s out there and available for us to use to the fullest extent possible to get us to the top of the resume pile.

“I don’t think of all the misery but of the beauty that still remains.”  ~Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl

“A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.”  ~Herm Albright, quoted in Reader’s Digest, June 1995

Finding a good job can be pretty troublesome. Especially when you have high expectations.

Here are some tips that helped me land the job of my dreams:

* You need to have a professional written resume. If you are not an expert, you could consider hiring one.
* Think about all the jobs you are qualified for. This may lead to discovering additional jobs you could land.
* Don’t neglect any source of jobs : internet, newspaper, radio and other media. Ask your friends that have similar jobs if there may be an opening in their company.
* Don’t just send the resume by email and wait for an answer. You need to call them and have them confirm the job opening and receiving your resume.

Finding a job is pretty much a job in itself and it’s all about how well can you market your abilities.
