Well, hello there and thanks for surfing my wave!
Many of you have read about my fascination with fortune cookies…this one delivered to me last night was no exception:
“You are always welcome in any gathering. Host a party this month.” Confucius must have never been unemployed…
Let’s break this down…if I’m always welcome in any gathering, why have I not been invited to a formal interview? If I’m always welcome, why haven’t throngs of companies been wooing me to their Boardrooms? If I’m always welcome, how come I’ve been unemployed for over six months, huh?
Host a party this month? I’m unemployed – how do you suppose I pay for it? If I’m always welcome, how come I haven’t had a party hosted in my honor? Nobody’s invited me to their house lately. Should I send out invitations to all my target companies and tell them I’m hosting a party; if you want it bring it, but there’ll be plenty of resumes to go around? I’d cry in my beer, but I can’t afford it? Should I invite the EDD to my house? How about the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences who never once wrote a note or called my house to ask if they could help me network or see how I’m doing – should I invite them over for a soirée? Should I invite all those companies who’ve rejected my credentials over for a celebration? Maybe I can host the party at their house and make them pay for it; fair enough? I’ll bring over some entertainment like Darts, Dungeons & Dragons, Pin the Tail on The Donkey (what’s that other word for Donkey?)…you know, friendly, break the ice conversational type things…
Is this fortune premature or immature? What I have done, and suggest for all is to thank everybody who has helped you along the way. Hey look, if I land some huge gig, I’ll throw a massive party to thank those who have given me a leg up to get to a better place. I just find the timing of various things in life especially perplexing. Things do have interesting ways of playing out, but this cookie was a real doozie for me! Maybe I’m thinking too hard and have too much time on my hands…
Ya’ll have a swell Un-Labor Day Weekend! Say, is birth labor any easier than finding employment labor? Just wondering…
“There are many paths to the top of the mountain, but the view is always the same.”
