Laughing in the Face of Jobless Despair

by TUM on May 20, 2009

Well, hello there and thanks for surfing my wave!

“Through humor, you can soften some of the worst blows that life delivers. And once you find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might be, you can survive it.”
-       Bill Cosby

I just love to laugh – uncontrollably.  I can remember my mother (Hi Mom!) taking me to movies and I would laugh so hard that old ladies sitting in front of me would have to move because I got so out of control, they couldn’t hear the film.  As I recall, that one picture in particular was “What’s Up Doc?” (1972) with Barbra Streisand and Ryan O’Neal.  As a matter of fact I laughed so hard, I missed quite a bit of the movie.  I didn’t care then, and I still don’t.  I was not the best student (really?), my parents divorced before I was ten, I was continually overweight, so I attracted myself to comedy as my release, my safe haven.  Even to this day I’m always shushed when my funny bone goes out of joint.  So what!  It’s their loss, really.

As we face each subsequent day, we seemingly get further and further from our goal; employment.  Turmoil at every level.  I feel like that hamster running in its wheel, uncontrollably faster, running from something or to something is unclear, the exercise apparent, but is it an exercise in futility?  If it is running from that we choose, the exercise is without gratification.  With each new day comes an opportunity to run toward; this, then becomes our race to find and shake hands with renewal.

“Never be afraid to try something new. Remember, amateurs built the ark. Professionals built the Titanic.”
-       Richard Jeni

It is then that the laughter becomes that much sweeter and harmonic as we attain our goal.  We must reach for our triumph as we laugh; uncontrollably with vision, passion and relish in its sound.  Then it’s time for rest.

“Laughter is an instant vacation.”
-       Milton Berle
