Health Alert For the Unemployed

by TUM on September 24, 2009

One of my childhood memories was little sayings and phrases coined by my family such as ‘Health Is Wealth’; as we age, that witticism gains more and more traction.  Speaking of traction, I have a history of a bad back.  My back this week has decided to offer a new lesson for me: If I’m not supposed to, don’t.  I was given a most expected pop quiz on that, and I failed big time.

New SAT or GRE analogy problem–

Doing Something Dumb:Paying The Price::Common Sense:Avoiding The Whole Mess Altogether

Okay, so I won’t make it as a college test question writer, but you get my point.

We must realize that our bodies are only designed to handle so much; listen to what it is saying and if you know you shouldn’t be heavily involved in certain activities please refrain from it.  A combination of things happened to me over the last few weeks that built up in my body and left me, well, flat on my back.  For one, I was helping some buddies work on a project requiring some lifting; okay, I lifted too much and I’m in relentless pain as I write.  Second, this computer and table on which it sits are not even close to ergonomically designed.  Third, I have a family member in the hospital and his condition runs the gamut; no one really knows for sure how it’s going to resolve or when.

Many things to look at here – we have full control over what physical activities we perform and how to set up a safe work environment.  I failed at both.  For the issues over which we have control in our lives, take full responsibility for them and be smart about it because there are so many things we don’t have control over, like the health of others.  When both of these factors take over all at once, it is a prescription for disaster which is precisely what I am faced with this week.  I knew better than to abuse my body, so please make sure you keep yours in shape and know your limitations and respect them.  When I am unable to shave because of my blatant carelessness, it’s time to take action and fix the problem.  When you are sick in a hospital and can’t perform routine daily functions, it truly puts into perspective how crucial it is to maintain our health and use common sense about it.  Life happens, so live it to our fullest by staying healthy and quickly recognizing what isn’t and being aware.

We are unemployed, so we have no sick time to help us through; if we’re down, our job-search is down as well.  You can’t sell a product if it’s not feeling good or under stress.  We are working on our computers more than ever now and our stresses are running at maximum levels, so make sure you have your workstation set up to create the least amount of strain for your body – this I must repair at once.  Sometimes I don’t practice what I preach, so I am walking more and looking at what isn’t working or needs improvement in my life and making the proper adjustments.  May I suggest you do the same.

Again, thanks for surfing my wave!
