Here’s A Story, of the Unemployed

by TUM on April 28, 2009

Well, hello there and thanks for surfing my wave!

Stories: every soul has at least one to tell.  Short-winded, get-me-outta-here-before-I-muzzle-you-winded and all forms in between.  Where was civilization without the advent of New Media, telecommunications, television, radio, cars, Theatre and the Arts?

People walked (novel idea!) to libraries, bookstores, lived closer to family members and realized they had neighbors; probably nicer ones then, for the most part.  And people engaged in storytelling.  According to Wikipedia, “storytelling has existed as long as humanity has had language. This is evidenced by the importance of storytelling in the Australian Aboriginal culture, the world’s oldest continuous culture.”

Let me briefly refer you to my Unemploymoney post;  Just read the first half of it…it’s okay.  I’ll wait…

…go ahead, now.  I ain’t goin’ anywhere.  GO!

Okay, so just when you calculated what life’s’ bumps in the road (HA!) were going to cost, it hits you.  Right in the ass.  A car!  Damn her, the driver!  Rear-ended.  At a full stop, no less!  How do you get butt kicked at a full stop?  Stupid people, that’s how.  Long story short, I finally got her to pull over, and what do I get from that driver?  A story!  Stories I don’t need to hear as I don’t give a rat’s tail!  She hit my car.  I don’t need this; especially now.  Any clue what’s next?  Wait, don’t tell me.

What’s the best (and only) thing your grandparents did when you were a kid bored beyond your years wanting to be anywhere but grand-trapped?

Yes, they told stories.  For Hours.  Could have actually been four hours.  Days?  What will we be doing at the end of our years, reminiscing to grandchildren, strength willing?  Hopefully we, too, will have spirited and inspiring tales to be told to pass along from generation to generation.

As we sit here and stew over what to do next and where to turn, let’s us all pray that this “bump” we call unemployment will be just another story to tell in our lives.  Hopefully it will not envelop or overshadow our true meaning of existence.  Perspective.  There will be something bigger, better and brighter in the days ahead.  As our story unfolds here, let it be that chase to the happy ending that encourages and leads us to continue on.

An upside of being unemployed is that it gives you new stories — stories of coping, stories of readjusting, stories of survival, stories of reinvention. The downside is that while it’s happening, you can’t fully enjoy those stories. It makes you want to get employed — if only to have the ability to step back from the constant stress of the job-hunt and be able to reflect on all those new stories you’ve just written.

Dear Mr. Greenberg:

How insightful! Thank you so much for taking the time to visit and leaving such a thoughtful, meaningful and remarkably true statement. I actually never thought about it this way and merits a tremendous applause and reflection. I thank you, not only for myself, but for all the world.
