How Do We Give Unemployed Thanks?

by TUM on November 25, 2009

Well, what can we do?  I guess we need to return to basics and bring it down a few notches to a level we can hopefully comprehend.  Saying it’s just a job and having one is one thing, when you don’t have one it gives it a whole new meaning.  So where on earth can we start to give thanks?  How do we rise above the muck to see the splendor?  Many things we take for granted others don’t have this holiday season.

Be thankful we can rise in the morning and get ready for the day unassisted or that we are capable of getting up at all.

Be thankful the majority of our family is healthy even though others might not be.  Pray for them and those hurting, but be grateful for those not going through that.

Be thankful for what support and solace you do have as others undoubtedly are going this nightmare alone.

Be thankful for your friends and family even though you might not be seeing eye-to-eye right now; at least we have eyes we can look out of.

Be thankful we are at home, in America, as others suffer abroad fighting for what freedoms we do have left.

Be thankful you still have a home.

Be thankful you have clothes.

Be thankful we have glasses in which to put water and hopefully we can see them more half-full than empty.

We did not cause this; we are simply the recipients whose good luck and fortune ran dry for a time.  There is better in store, there is hope in the air.  Go out and breathe hope, not despair and be thankful.  For every one thing we can be thankful, there are two or three things others cannot be as fortunate.

Yeah, it really is just a job – be thankful we still have the capacity to work and try to enjoy.

Great reminder of the things we take for granted.

Thanks! I try to put in perspective–it’s not easy, but it helps…

Learning to be thankful has been the single most surprising result of being unemployed for the past 9 months. I am serious when I say “learning” to be thankful;as it was not an automatic reaction to being laid off - for me it was more like a gradual process. Also, something I’ve often heard , but can now embrace as true - “it’s not important what happens to you, rather how you react to what happens to you.”

Hi Deb!

Thank you for your comment! Our situation is a huge learning process, and yes it is gradual. The reaction part of becoming unemployed will, indeed, make or break you. Be bitter and get angry–grieve! But then, like all things in life, when one chapter ends, we must learn to move on as positively as possible. Be thankful for who you are and what you have–count your blessings and be thankful. It can cheer you up and, in time, you can return the favor when others are down on their luck. You’ve learned plenty in nine months–congrats!

Warmest Wishes!
