Well, hello there and thanks for surfing my wave!
So they say you should pick your battles; what they don’t say is how to prioritize them.
This is one of the biggest hurdles facing us right now; we have many battles trying to wrestle us to the ground. Where to start? We’re unemployed – Battle One. Other battles we’re fighting are from family; do this or that or don’t ever think about working there. Many of us have children that are in the middle of whatever cannon fire is being launched from the kitchen table or out the bedroom window. Conversations are running amuck. We are dealing with neighbors and friends trying to prod us into directions that might not be for us. They are very well-spirited and they are just trying to help. We need to buck up, take charge and keep control as to not lose the war.
The Battle Hymn of the Unemployed.
What I propose is to listen to all the input as some of it might be of use. But what is crucial here is to fire back when and as needed. Along with listening, place your defenses appropriately and if you are being told something that puts you in disagreement, by all means say it. The more we are told what to do without us commenting or just shrugging our complacent shoulders, the more these actions will continue. Tell people what you are doing in your life, how you are handing things and what specifically you are seeking. Always have a plan and be honest to it. You know that 30-second elevator speech we all keep getting pounded into us? We need to take that elevator speech and personalize it for when we are not in a business atmosphere. Tell everybody you are a responsible adult and be proactive about it. Have loaded bullet points ready to fire off to them. Let’s not give way to any war monger trying to pick a fight.
Yes, we have many battles to fight, but the war is theirs. Let all the others deal with the casualties and let us fight the battles, one by one. As we put out all our fires and return to a more normal and tranquil existence, most of these people we know will still be out there wearing fatigues. Because this is who they are and what they do best. If we are continually confronted by friends, family, colleagues or whomever, just walk away. Let us not stand in the path of their negativity and uselessness. We can always win the battle of the minds as we have found strength in ourselves to cast them off. Do not let your coat of armor wear thin or dull. We have the control and we are in command. Don’t let your ship be commandeered; liberate the pirates from within and toss that heavy anchor onto some other vessel freeing us to move on without further restraint.
