Retracing Unemployed Steps to Maintain Your Network

by TUM on August 31, 2009

Well, hello there and thanks for surfing my wave!

Happy Monday – were you able to listen to my podcast?  Ingenious idea if you think about its potential – New Age Networking!

So as we start a new un-work week, we continue to pound away at the decaying and shattered pavement as we unearth more and more gravel digging us further and further into the abyss of the unknown and unfriendly world of unemployment.

What’s left to do you deliberate?

May I suggest retracing your steps for a moment and look back at whom you’ve contacted and what you’ve accomplished since that fateful day?  We must now revisit all those connections we established months ago and earlier; start following up and remind them that you are still looking for work and what have they learned about the job market and your prospects since you last spoke.  Always keep a daily journal of all your correspondences for ease in referring to your search.  Refresh the dialogue with them to spark their memory and put your name back on their front burners to regain interest yet again.  As we build relationships, we cannot let the spinning plate fall from its perch; we must strive to maintain it and keep it spinning.  Unfortunately we are the ones who must set the plate in motion, but without action we have no prospects or movement.

Do you have friends or family living in or familiar with networking opportunities within other States?  If you have no roots to speak of, now might be the time to research relocating.  I am unable to do that, but seeing that California is only going to slide further down the employment totem pole, it’s a good idea especially if you live in the Western U.S.

As industries continue consolidating, we are at an immediate disadvantage as we become instantly over qualified for most positions as sectors look for cheap and under qualified for others, specifically Broadcasting, as remaining laborers fill those seats of the dearly departed.  The jobs we were doing before now become only half of the requirements as we apply for similar positions today.  People who have been assigned your duties are still performing all the other responsibilities they had prior, so if they left I would only be able to do half the job.  Tremendous disconnect and decisions completely left poorly thought out. If and when businesses start a growth pattern, they will have let all those experienced folks go leaving an enormous void in their new development model.

If what you left is something you can market and execute solo, I highly recommend investing in and delving into that as I am hearing so often that as jobs disappear, hordes of us are looking toward self-employment possibilities for all the reasons indicated on this website.  There is more entrepreneurialism occurring today than ever before and it’s all happening on-line.  The opportunities and technologies exist to encourage this behavior, so why not?  As I’ve mentioned, give confidence to your thoughts of what it is you’ve done in the past that you can now concentrate on singly to become a new robust and passionate business for yourself.

Also, make sure you register for as many job sites, social networking and on-line groups that you can.  Just today I was given the statistic that responding to on-line postings, even for a specific Company, make up no more than 15% of jobs filled; it is sifting through these networks in search of that hidden job about which we hear so much that will land the offer.  The more creative and innovative you can be, the more ahead of the game you’ll be; not many wins in the win column yet, but the opposing team will eventually weaken.  Keep your eye on the ball, and when you least expect it, you will hit one (or more!) out of the park.

Batter Up!
