Well, hello there and thanks for surfing my wave!
Okay, Okay – calm down! Let me explain; stop shouting, take a deep breath and calm down…
Here’s the deal: If you haven’t already done so, volunteerism is a fabulous way to get involved, get motivated about an organization and its projects, meet potential leads and job resources, and just maybe discover an untapped passion. Yeah, you aren’t getting paid and getting involved in these things can take a lot of time. But think about it, folks…are you getting paid for your job-search scanning corporate websites, job boards and discussion groups? Uh, no. Volunteering your time - yeah, working for free - is a hands-on, proactive approach to finding employment; it will give you a great shot in the arm to increase your contacts and you might find within that association a path leading to revenue. In this day and age, everything you do is a possibility and big step forward in meeting your goals. You really never know whom you’re going to meet; and not only those people, but the rolodex they might have. It’s a fabulous game of snowball – just think…something might connect!
As for me, I’m quite active and involved in a Men’s Club and my wife is very active and involved with Girl Scouts, so that’s double the effort. If you’re in a relationship, maybe that person can go to bat for you as well – the more, the merrier! I’ve met several guys that have helped me out, one in particular with this blog. It’s all out there; yes, it’s a 23,598 piece puzzle, but with the correct help and guidance, you’ll find yourself putting it together in no time. Try it, you’ll like it!
Think about attitude – doing this is an enormous boost to one’s esteem that has been undoubtedly kicked around lately; your efforts will most definitely be appreciated, noticed and you might get accolades from it. You will have an opportunity to perfect your business skills, become more aware of your strengths and some weaknesses might crop up in the process. Great! There’s no time like the present to uncover these gems and chart a course of action to fix them, thus enabling you to become more marketable.
Do some soul-searching as you job-search; if you have a hobby, trade or anything that sparks your curiosity, look to see what volunteer outfits are associated with them and mosey on down to their local offices or shoot them an email. Make sure you tell them what you can promise to do and mention your availability so you can make a positive start that will allow you to follow through with your commitment.
“Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they’re worthless, but because they’re priceless.” ~Sherry Anderson (Thanks, Kathy)
