I feel like every time I step foot out the door, I become a freakin’ billboard for a job. Good thing! Need a World-Wide Poster Child for Everything Unemployed? Pick me, Pick Me!
I already belong to 3 job-support workshops that meet weekly, I am the Executive VP of one volunteer organization (a must-join, folks!) and the Training VP of another, I’ve attended countless supplementary opportunities geared toward my job-search both on- and off-line and have traveled sometimes great distances to get to several of them. I’m also a member of PinkSlipMixers. I’m on LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube and have associated myself with many on-line forums dedicated to helping us find work. I plan to start an FB Fan Page soon. I am a Professional Unemployed.
I have yet to snag an in-person interview – time to work unemployment overtime.
So we take the kids to our local Pumpkin Festival and peruse its offerings; lots of things to do. Games, rides, decent bands this year, tons o’food of course, folks selling wares and others pitching memberships and services to the masses. And Pumpkins! Of course, my group didn’t come here for those purchases because you can buy them cheaper elsewhere…who knew?! Now if those same principles could only be applied in my house by turning off lights and what have you before leaving a room or the house, we’d really be saving something, but I digress…
We encounter Service Organization Row. My wife highlights the Rotary International table. How much more could I possibly fit in? I talked to the very congenial and non-committal woman representative at the booth; I like and admire people that aren’t pushy when you approach them at these things. We talked a bit and she asked some questions as did I…no, I can’t call it an interview. Guess what? She’s a Television Producer for a cable channel conglomerate! Who’dathunk that one!? Do I turn away in over-saturated, over-stressed and over-stretched tremors? Uh, no; probably not a good career move as they say. My parents are Rotarians and I feel out of loyalty to them and the naked truth that this is a networking opportunity handed to me on a silver platter as this kind soul is a perfect target for me, I’d be a blithering and bumbling idiot not to accept their offer to check them out.
So I did, yesterday. Wow, what a vast gathering of highly dedicated, driven and determined professionals whose core purpose is helping others. But I’m already doing that! But not like this. I’m not sworn to the Organization yet, but I can tell you that they already see me working on projects for them that could really catapult my efforts to find a job and promote this very website to heights never before imagined. I’d be honored and delighted to do it for them! Well, I imagined it, however I didn’t think it would fit like this which proves one thing…
If it looks like it could help, if it talks like it could help, if the person offering you the chance to help is already in your line of work – it can help…Do It! You never know what’s on the other page until you turn it. Check out service clubs and organizations in your area beyond the Chambers; most likely you’ll find out there’s at least one that’s up your alley.
Funny enough, included in the philosophy’s’ objectives, Rotary adopted this “four-way test” used to see if a planned action is compatible with the Rotarian spirit. The test was developed by Rotarian and entrepreneur Herbert J. Taylor during the Great Depression as a set of guidelines for restoring faltering businesses and was adopted as the standard of ethics by Rotary in 1942. It is still seen as a standard for ethics in business management. (As sourced from Wikipedia.com)
Talk about Great Depressions…we’re in one regardless of what’s said by “experts”. Maybe Governments of the world and petty and greedy companies and crafty and corrupt individuals responsible for this mess could take a lesson and note Mr. Taylor’s Test.
You can only challenge yourself to get to the next level; we just can’t arrive miraculously or by harming others. By utilizing adequate, available and amenable assistance and resources, we can get there. It just needs to be done justly and judiciously.
Challenge yourself to accomplish more productive endeavors by giving…someday you’ll get it back. Really.
As Always, Thanks for Surfing My Wave!
