Well, hello there and thanks for surfing my wave!
According to Dictionary.com, talent is defined as: (1) a special natural ability or aptitude, (2) a capacity for achievement or success.
Let’s take a genuine look at this. It’s been said that my father-in-law (of blessed memory) led a dual life; he had his “business” life and his “personal” or family life. Having said that, family for me always comes first so I need to be cautious when I look at Companies to make sure the travelling isn’t 70 or 80 percent or take a job where that said firm “owns” you…kinda’ like my last one. Now is a fabulous time to assess our talents to see what we want and distinguish what’s most important in our lives.
When we break this down, we can also weigh in with our strengths and weaknesses as we compare business vs. personal; what is best for us and in which environment. For example, I have decided to use my newfound skills to create and develop a new business that works for me not someone else. This is my talent.
What are your talents and where do they shine? Are your strengths the same at work as at home? What about your weaknesses; same or different? Oftentimes people say they need to “switch gears” after coming home from work; after awhile, those gears can get stripped and broken if the job’s not for you. All the experts agree that we need to play to our strengths, but were those strengths really being applied in our former work situations? Now is the time to evaluate all that. Now that we are no longer doing what we were doing, we can spend some time with ourselves to ask was that really what we wanted to be doing for a living. Really think about this; we have the time, let’s use its potential. Please don’t just apply for something because, “Well, it’s what I was doing before.” I discovered something new and made a complete 360! As you look at new ventures both for others and yourself, think about this: Risk. If you get and accept that offer for that huge position (uh, not me!), what are you in for? Do you really know what your boss and colleagues are going to be like on your first day of work or weeks down the road? Are those Job Duties really what you’re going to be doing or just some pretty read the HR Dept. threw together? Were they completely familiar with the position when they posted it? Yea, it’s a job but before you beat me silly for biting the hands that feeds me, hear me out on the other side. To be fair for an equal lashing, the same risk is posed by starting your own business, BUT you have the control; you are your own boss and you run your books. You don’t have to worry if you take a job elsewhere that you’re just pushing paper to keep the place from going under. Are you going to get laid off again? You have full control and, in this economy, it might be worth ample consideration.
If we strive to actuate our talents to the utmost, we will maximize our potential and be better achievers, derive immense satisfaction and attain success in vast abundance.
