Well, hello there and thanks for surfing my wave!
Interview Questions. You know the ones you hate to hear; the ones that make you sweat, squirm and make you feel that all the blood in your body is pooling into your big toes. Here’s what you can do with all this crazy time we have:
Look at all the questions you hate and work on them to improve you. This will build self-confidence and help bolster the questions we know we can nail. Take a grim look at that one about our weaknesses. Makes your skin crawl too? Fix it! Take the time and delve into what resources we have and need to strengthen the answer. If you’re like me, and I hope you’re not, learn more about computer softwares, programs and industry platforms that you see in job requirements you think are keeping you from applying or getting the interview. Read some books and maybe take a class or two to develop those skills that will help you answer the question. In fact, now you’ll be able to answer the question by saying not only what that weakness was, but you’ve taken a proactive approach during your work absence by recognizing the fault and fixing it. That alone might get you an offer.
Where do you want to be in five years? Of course the short answer is, “Employed you Idiot!” but I digress and turn to divisive and less professional tact. Not the correct answer although it can be in our thoughts. Where is the future of your Industry? Take a solid look at where your business is headed to better prepare you to answer that question. How can you be an integral part of taking that prospective employer to the next level? What are its competitors doing? We must apply cutting-edge and forward thinking to pull in and capture Hiring Managers’ attention. Let’s find out where the Company will most likely be in 5 years and approach the question with you as an important entity in that model. We now have the time to perform all those inquiries and get a good jump start on fact-finding and tackling these issues.
Why should this Company hire you? Yes, the short answer is, “’Cause I’m hungry and my family is driving me up the wall to get out of the house!” but, again we must defer. Well, you’ve done your homework; you have the ambition, passion and knowledge to accomplish the tasks you are hired to complete but also will keep the company competitive in today’s marketplace. You are the best suited out there because you know who the customers are and what they want and you are prepared to deliver the goods better than anyone.
We must consistently be focused and driven to set the goals and then challenge ourselves to meet them with success and satisfaction. Don’t be scared, be prepared. Now is the time to look at what we can aggressively carry out by learning new skills and brushing up on the old. It’s all within our power; you can do it, you just have to want to.
