Got Gap? A Primer on Bridging

by TUM on June 2, 2009

Well, hello there and thanks for surfing my wave!

Here’s one of my problems.  I do have several going on right now, so this is just one…

The setback I see is two-fold:

First there’s the gap in employment; how do we explain the ever-increasing period of time we’re out of work?  Second is the ever-present aura that we no longer are marketable in our field because of our inability to master the new technologies or we just don’t know enough of it to warrant employment.  Instead of teaching us, we get laid-off.

Gap – it’s not just a clothing store anymore.

What good is it to dump seasoned workers who have plenty of life left in them when all we might need is a tune-up?  Just last week I spoke with a woman who made a huge point: When this “recovery” takes place what will happen to these Companies when they are ready to position themselves for growth once again?  When these businesses start getting more traction, the knowledgeable staff they once had will be gone.  Those same individuals that made their CEO’s look good were told they don’t need us.  What do you do with inexperience?  Train them?  With what and how?  They never had the background of the folks they replaced.  I clearly understand that cutbacks were needed, but start from the ground up.  These layoffs were done completely backwards.  Corporations went to the most expensive workers to save the most money, but never took into account rebuilding efforts.

Haste makes waste, my father always told me.

Having come from the world of Television Administration, I can brilliantly see where this Sector is moving.  My problem I started this post with is I don’t have the “gap sense” – the technological background to continue to move the Industry forward.  Entertainment is all about digital and mobile and choices.  I want it and I want it now no matter where I am.  Life On Demand.  I understand it all; I just don’t have that specific training.  Well, this website is a comprehensive testament that I’m learning.

So what do I tell a perspective employer what I’ve been doing since Das Boot?  Tell them the truth.  I’ve been spending countless hours teaching and training myself many of the aspects and applications I will need to move Your Company ahead into the future.  My last job didn’t give a whoop but I’m proactive; I’m making a statement by doing what hasn’t been done but needs to – to get me to the next level and anyone else out there who wants to know how.
