Stop the World, I’m Unemployed

by TUM on April 27, 2009

Well, hello there and thanks for surfing my wave!

No helpful gas station here, folks; tighten your seat belts and hang on… it’s gonna be a bumpy ride!

Ok, so you’re in the interview and you get asked the dreaded question: “Where do you want to be in 5 years?”  Would your answer ever be unemployed, looking to start a new career so just shoot me already?

Today’s world is both a curse and a blessing – which one do you want?

I’m in a mood today, so I’ll start with the curse.  You’ve been doing the same thing for decades now, and some idiot gets the idea of cost cutting your job into oblivion – okay, so dump my ass you sorry bastard and I’ll show you who’s boss!  You call all your “friends”, get an interview the same day and the offer the following week, right?

Insert cricket audio loop here…

You figure you’ve been doing it for so long, somebody out there will scream to you or something.  Where have you been all my workload?!  Not so.  Less money for same output.  These cost-cutting cut-ups are the viruses of terrestrial life forms.  You have 2 choices: you can have a 30-year veteran who’s a well-oiled machine or a 30-year-old novice who makes the Tin Man look profitable.  You can’t have the 30-year-old with 30 years in the business.  Forget the economy, it just won’t happen.

Ahhh…the economy.  So the curse rears its ugly head in various forms; the economy sucks, it’s not getting any better soon, you can’t move to another industry because they’ll make your last gig look pretty and you hated that one, everywhere you look you think back, gee I wish they did just shoot me during that fateful interview.

Exit curse, enter blessing.

So you say you were in this same situation 15 years ago and it’s even harder now?  And you’re impetuous enough to want to know why?  With the ship 5 million (and counting) over capacity, you’d sink too. With the population as niche-driven and scattered as to what they want to be when they grow up, it’s a wonder anything gets done around here.  What has changed in this timeframe that could get us out of this fox hole?  Technology!  There have been countless businesses and opportunities that have opened up with the advent of online communications.  What I find extraordinarily interesting is that in the course of my current job-search, leads are at a stand-still.  This blog that you are perusing – I have received umpteen opportunities from people to write for it, optimize it…you name it…this stuff is hot, hot, hot!  Never in my wildest dreams (and I’ll admit I haven’t had many lately) did I think that I’d be near out of luck with my traditional job hunt, but when it comes to this crazy idea I had for a blog, I’m getting tons of emails, phone calls and offers to help and improve its performance.  From the same people that couldn’t help me in a customary job search!  Now they tell me!

Aren’t roller coasters fun?  Well, this one might get a tad exciting; in which direction will my life turn?  Will the lights come on?  Strobing?  And what the hell will that annoying, candid picture look like that you see on the way out?
What’s worse, vertigo or the fear of not knowing?
In what or which direction is your life turning?  Please comment!  Click above link – if it says “No Comment”, be the first!  Thanks!
