The Jay Leno Experience: An Unemployed Guide to Success

“There is nothing that kills creativity more than bitterness”
~ Jay Leno

I recently read an exclusive interview Mr. Leno gave to Broadcast & Cable over an array of highly controversial and sensitive topics.  It was a very interesting, enlightening and frank look into the serious side of one of the most revered and successful comic minds of our time.  And to think that, after all this man has been put through, he is still a testament to what you can become if you are strong-minded and persevere.  If you stay sensible and don’t let your emotions get in your way, you can overcome just about any obstacle and you will succeed as Jay Leno has.

All of us are bitter after losing a job; we’re human – it’s what we do with it and how we handle it all that will determine our future.  Staying bitter and not getting past that will undoubtedly hinder and sabotage our job-search and keep us from reaching and living up to our potential.  What I suggest is what I was told to do at the EDD workshop I attended yesterday: Remember that poison pen letter you’ve always wanted to write to that so-and-so ex-boss of yours?

Write it now while you have the time…get it off your chest and out of your mind.  Just promise me one important caveat – don’t send it!  Put it in a top-secret, safe place where only you have access.  And of course, remember its location.  Maybe you just want to rip it to shreds to avoid temptation?  Writing is quite cathartic and will relieve tons of anguish and pent-up stress.  It’s almost like you said it, but didn’t.  Sub-consciously is serves the same purpose except you won’t get fired for expressing it this way.  Yeah, the bastard won’t hear it, but it’s his loss…you’ll feel way better afterwards!

“I try to keep myself level-headed, and that’s how you do it. If I have any strength at all in this business, it’s the ability to keep going forward under tremendous pressure and under tremendous body shots, and that’s where your advantage is.”
~ Jay Leno

Mr. Leno’s words go galaxies beyond his situation; it can be applied to life and how we can react to being unemployed.  I laud people who are able to look at dissention and negativity in the face and, well…laugh and take things with a grain of salt.  Always stay ahead of the game and remain vigilant, moving forward never stopping once to let things get you down or hold you from your goal.  We must always try hard and be open to new resources and possibilities.  Keep a positive attitude and the thought that our situation is merely temporary as eternal as it feels now.  Jay Leno has been stuck down so many times before and he’s always accepted the fight as a challenge, maybe not to do better, but to show the world how graceful he can be to accept what’s been placed before him and stand up one more time, taking another valiant chance to shine in the limelight.

“Sometimes going against insurmountable odds and making a little progress is maybe more satisfying than going into a situation where you’re going to win no matter what.”
~ Jay Leno
