If any of you ever thought about starting your own business card company, now’s the time.
It seems that every morning you tune in to a news outlet, someone else is doing someone else’s job. The Wacky World of Entertainment is rapidly becoming a self-made horror picture. The only problem here is whose names do you put on the credit roll? Do you put names and faces with a disclaimer, “Subject to Change?” Do you amass a staff that started the film, got recruited in the middle and then a new crew to finish and edit? How about those credits, “Babies Born During Production”…maybe some new titles: “Divorces During Production”, Executive and Studio Turnovers During Production”, “Litigation About Production During Production”, “Affairs During Production”, and the list goes on. How can you conduct any kind of business in such a turbulent and turmoil-ridden atmosphere?
The Magazine Industry is literally getting torn to shreds. Want to work in auto manufacturing or be a dealership franchisee or salesperson? Talk about driving in the wrong direction. Construction? Who can afford a house? Healthcare? Send your resume to The White House for that one. The Mortgage & Banking sector is in such disarray, I know of several people who now have an extinct resume. That’s right; they have 20 years of experience with companies that no longer exist, so how is one to check on references, salary and employment history when perspective employers want to hire these folks? The verification process has been nullified and my friends are being denied jobs because hiring managers are afraid my colleagues are the ones that shut down those past employers – ridiculous or what? You mean to tell me that everyone walking into a lenders’ door for an interview is being called the one that ran off with the treasury? Insane!
Part of the problem is companies are burning candles at both ends; instead of coming up with solid fixes to their current business model, they’re putting Band-Aids on them at the same time trying to develop new platforms for the same business with no descent working model or strategy on which to run it. Everybody appears to be running scared, clueless as to their next move or making ones hastily.
So what are we, the unemployed, supposed to do? How are we to deal with our issues when we are shown, in daily and real-time detail, that the Companies we are targeting can’t deal with theirs? They make sudden decisions that are half-baked and poorly thought out. Never before have employers had so many of us from which to choose and yet they still can’t seem to make prudent hiring decisions. Of course I speak in generalities as I’m sure somewhere out there companies are making good fits…I hope. I’d just like to know who they are. One would think that with all the hassle involved in applying for jobs lately, an employer should be able and capable of stepping up to the plate and hit a home run with it. But, maybe it’s being made more complicated than need be – hey, that could be the real problem! Maybe there’s just too many of us to handle or care about.
Whatever the problem is, it’s real, it’s here and it’s front and center. While businesses are pulling at straws to make money, we are being thrown straws enough to break the proverbial camels’ back. Is that why I’m in excruciating pain – too many straws?
Don’t feel sorry or embarrassed that you have no “paying” job right now; you’re in record-setting company. Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell the postman, UPS and FedEx delivery fleet as well. Just yesterday I was at one of my support groups and found out that a spouse of one of the members got incensed that an email to all their friends and associates went out requesting assistance with the job search. The member got it right and shame on the spouse; be open and forthcoming with everyone and if you are not getting support or comfort from those you hold near and dear, hold them much less…maybe let go of them completely. Now is not the time for ridicule, negativity or put downs. Now is the time to unite and be united with those who can help. If you feel you need professional counseling, don’t be afraid of it and seek it out. A simple computer search for free counseling services in your area is a start. Don’t shy away from what you imminently need and require in your life because if you are unable or finding it difficult to cope, that will only hinder and distract you from finding your passion. By waiting to address this, you will only get worse. Get the help you need and get it now.
