Okay, so as I writhe and wince in pain-scale ten agony from whatever ill-fated workstation I have, I decided to read some – what a novel idea! However, I didn’t pick up a book just to pass some time; I figured if I was going to take time off the keyboard, I’d learn something and learn I did.
This time-honored testimonial of all things job, or un-job related, should be a college text in every classroom. It is the handbooks’ handbook of how to look for anything and everything in the workplace and properly engage yourself into today’s workforce.
But, it shouldn’t be read just to be read; it is thought-provoking and empowers one to delve deep into one’s soul for introspection and self-action. Since Richard N. Bolles asks for comment, well…here is mine:
What Color Is Your Parachute? I haven’t finished the 2009 edition, but I have taken so many notes on just the first 50 pages, I am taking the time to post this article based on something from page 4. Yep, I don’t waste any time. Mr. Bolles spends quite a bit of time answering questions from his readers – quite a noble and dignified act in this day and age. Possibly one of the reasons why he’s sold over 10 million copies? Could it be he cares? One of the queries revolves around the need for a computer in our job-hunt. He writes back, “It’s not mandatory, and if you don’t have a computer, there are non-Internet job-hunting resources…” He goes on to list several of these and into painstaking detail as to why. The book is compiled with absolute completeness in mind and does a remarkable job to that end. No stones are left uncovered here, but the book is remiss in not telling you to invest in a computer for one reason: Everyone else has one. At least.
What the book strives to prove by this is to not become dependant on these devises, but that is becoming increasingly difficult. My 11-year-old daughter is now getting grades, homework and updates all on-line. No computer, no education. On-line applications for most jobs are so ridiculously complicated and arduous, you want to think why bother? Employers want to know you can navigate your way through a computer so they make it their mission to effort the best in those softwares. Most terrestrial news-gathering organizations give you snippets of stories just as a tease; what they really want is to drive us to their on-line platforms. No computer, no nothing.
What Color Is Your Parachute? gives us every opportunity and avenue to find a job; a powerful mind opener and massager. I simply want to point out that by not having a computer is not the answer. It is an essential alternative to get you to use old-school tools that could lead to employment. Do yourself a favor and invest in a computer – who on earth will hire you anyway if you’re not computer literate? Are you supposed to go to the library or friends’ house to check your office email?
Now I’m not sure if this book answers its titled question, but my take on it is this: Whatever color your parachute happens to be, be flexible with it. You have supplementary opportunities out there with more than just one chosen color in mind.
Oh…and by the way, once you get that computer…make sure you set it up with your body in mind…Mr. Bolles didn’t mention that one either…ouch!
More about this remarkable work of literary genius later!
Again, thanks for surfing my wave!
