Would You Hire Yourself?

by TUM on June 12, 2009

Well, hello there and thanks for surfing my wave!

I don’t know if any of you have been asked this question, but it’s a winner.  What worked for you in your last job – what didn’t?  What would have gotten you to the next level?  Now is the time to start from scratch and make that list of which we’ve been often reminded.  Put it up on computer screen and begin taking notes on yourself.  For me, it’s all about where the technology is going in Media and Entertainment.  That is a primary explanation as to why you are reading this.  I am becoming skilled at and fine-tuning on-line platforms.  If by some miraculous chance I get called in for an actual interview, I can prove that I am making myself a better employee and more marketable.

Would I hire me?  Yes.  I am making a proactive effort everyday to move myself forward and up; as I have heralded many times, how can we sit aimlessly by and do the same stuff all day?  We no longer exist in a same stuff world.  It is now a fundamental necessity to change with the times.  The problem here is that workplaces are changing so fast, where do we start and how do we keep up with it?

Do what I’m doing – start your own Ballclub.  Take a bit of a calculated risk and make an investment in you; chances are you’ll surprise yourself – take a look at most financial portfolios today.  You present much better odds than that I assure you.

So as you peruse that list of what is working in your being and where you require improvements, after finishing all that everyday searching, do some soul-searching to make you more hirable.  As I’ve suggested, don’t be complacent and look for the same, look to the end zone.

It was eighth grade physical education – we were playing flag football.  Yea, I mentioned my glorious prowess in sports (not!), but this was classic.  It only happened once, and will never again.  A one-hit wonder.  I was always last – dead last – when it came to picking teams in school.  I was usually left to merely even up the sides; dead weight.  So it came down to this game and I was out there on the field like always.  I was in the end zone and I was open, open like I am today waiting for some bizarre occurrence to end my strife on the unemployment skids, and the QB (I still remember his name) saw me and I him and, with nowhere else to turn, he threw that projectile of pigskin right at me like some planned clandestine scheme.  Not a person expected it; the Coach was stunned.  I caught the ball and won the game.

It was vastly unexpected – like me doing anything in the computer world as I am ensconced in this minute.  Had I understood, earnestly taken personal mental notes as I tell you here, and gone with that feeling at that moment, I would be in a much healthier professional position at present.  Again, look back to your past to see missed opportunities and reflect on those sensations and nurture them.  Consider those times again and relive them now; we have been given the gift of time where we are not forced to do someone else’s work.  Concentrate on your own work and what can make you a better employee.

Go out today and hire yourself.
